Parking in the Townsville CBD will be free from 2pm this Thursday when the North Queensland Cowboys take on the Newcastle Knights at Queensland Country Bank Stadium.
Townsville City Council makes all on-street CBD parking free from 2pm on stadium event days to lessen the impact on surrounding residential areas as revellers head to events.
Mayor Jenny Hill said Council had worked hard to make sure residents’ street access wasn’t impeded on during games at the stadium.
“Council has committed to making parking free from 2pm in the CBD on stadium event days,” Cr Hill said.
“This will help lessen the impact on residents living in nearby suburbs and means anyone heading to events at the stadium can park their car in the CBD for free from 2pm onwards without risk of a parking infringement notice.”
Cr Hill said the stadium had already been beneficial in bringing the Townsville CBD to life.
“Having a world-class stadium in our city centre has already brought great economic benefits to local businesses, including cafes, restaurants and hotels,” Cr Hill said.
“Council has already thrown its support behind events at the stadium like this month’s trans-Tasman Super Rugby match, the Horn v Tszyu fight and the Elton John concert because we can see the ripple-on effect that hosting blockbuster events can bring to our city.”
Parking will be free from 2pm onwards this Thursday, and on subsequent weekday stadium event days.
