EXTENSIVE VANDALISM TO PARK IRRIGATION SYSTEMS

Council is asking for public assistance to identify those responsible for extensive vandalism to irrigation systems in 19 parks across Townsville in the past week.

Council Infrastructure Services Committee chairperson Kurt Rehbein said crews were working to repair the damage however it would take time and grass and plants would start to dry out.

“In-ground irrigation cabling in electrical pits in 19 parks across eight suburbs have been cut, stopping the irrigation from working,” Cr Rehbein said. “We will need to replace kilometres of cabling which will cost thousands of dollars, which is a cost that will have to be borne by ratepayers. We are at a loss to understand why anyone would damage our irrigation system like this. This is senseless wanton vandalism. These systems ensure our parks are efficiently and effectively irrigated, so they remain looking good for our community to enjoy. The incidents have been reported to the Queensland Police Service and we are examining CCTV footage where it is available to try to identify the culprits.”

Anyone with information should contact Policelink on 131 444.

“This is really disappointing behaviour and I hope those responsible are identified and face the full force of the law,” Cr Rehbein said.
