Celebrate Australia Day with Townsville City Council’s fun-filled free community events on January 26.
The free events along The Strand will suit anyone’s interests, from fitness fanatics to foodies and everyone in between.
Acting Mayor Ann-Maree Greaney said Australia Day would kick off at 6.30am with the Aussie Fun Run held in conjunction with the Townsville Roadrunners.
“What better way to start your day than with a 5km fun run to support the Magnetic Island Turtle Hospital. Just grab some mates, dress up in your best Aussie outfits and make your gold coin donation before starting the run,” Cr Greaney said. “The first 500 people will be rewarded with a free Aussie breakfast at Jezzine Barracks before our formal ceremonies begin. The ceremonies will start at 9am and will include a traditional state flag raising ceremony and a 21-gun salute, and will be followed by the welcoming of our newest Australians at the Citizenship Ceremony.”
Cr Greaney said the excitement was planned to continue into the afternoon.
“From midday onwards Council will be hosting the Beach Day Out at The Rockpool, with live music and roving entertainment, an Aussie car show, amusements and food trucks,” she said. “The highlight of the afternoon will be the Return It Recycle Regatta where registered participants who have made their own boats with recycled materials will race around the Rockpool for the chance to win exciting prizes. If you want to take part in the regatta register your interest now on Council’s website.”
