BOUNDARY STREET, CHARTERS TOWERS ROAD CLOSE AHEAD OF SUPERCARS

The rubber has hit the road as preparation work kicks up a gear to get the Reid Park track ready for an octane-fuelled weekend of racing for the NTI Townsville 500 next week.

Townsville Mayor Jenny Hill said road closures were starting today, and residents travelling into the CBD should plan ahead and be aware of road closures and parking regulations.

“From today until July 12, road closures will be in place for the street section of the track along Boundary Street and Charters Towers Road,” Cr Hill said. “This is the 13th year of Supercar action at the Reid Park track, and as a city we are well practised at managing road closures and traffic conditions while the Supercars are in town. One of the things spectators and drivers love about the Reid Park track is that it is a street circuit, but that does mean for 12 days road closures have to be in place to prepare the track for racing action. This road closure means the TicketShop at Townsville Civic Theatre will be closed to customers until 9am on July 12, but you will still be able to contact the TicketShop on 4727 9797 during business hours to book over the phone.”

Deputy Mayor Mark Molachino said he understood some of the frustrations motorists would feel and thanked them for their cooperation.

“This will impact nearby residents, people who travel into the CBD and the game day crowd for the blockbuster Cowboys v Broncos game Saturday night at Queensland Country Bank Stadium,” Cr Molachino said. “Be aware that it could take longer to get where you need to go, please obey all the signage and be mindful of the parking regulations. Similar to previous years, a regulated parking zone will be in place throughout the Supercars precinct to prevent residents who live in the area from being impacted by event parking.”
