A Night of Sporting Celebration in Townsville
Nominations are open until September 7, with winners to be announced at a spectacular awards night on Saturday, October 25 at the Townsville Entertainment and Convention Centre.
North Queensland Sports Foundation CEO Alex Fisher says this year’s event will be bigger than ever:
“We’re throwing out all the stops to make it our biggest awards yet. We want to know about all of our local sporting legends and trailblazers across all categories, and celebrate their efforts.”
This year also introduces a brand-new category: the Sports Impact Award — recognising the officials, volunteers, and sports administrators who keep sport thriving across North Queensland.
A Legacy of Sporting Greats
The Sportstar Awards have a rich history of celebrating some of the region’s biggest names. Triathlete Brad Beven was the very first Senior Sportstar winner in 1991, later joining the North Queensland Sports Hall of Fame alongside Karrie Webb and Ashleigh Stebbeings.
The awards have also spotlighted future stars early in their careers — like Corey Jensen, now a Brisbane Bronco, who won the Junior Sportstar award back in 2008.
Recognising Excellence, From Grassroots to Greatness
Townsville Acting Mayor Ann-Maree Greaney says the awards are a true reflection of the sporting spirit in the north:
“The North Queensland Sportstar Awards are a brilliant opportunity to shine a light on the sports players and organisers who make our community proud. During the awards’ 35 years there have been 3,500 nominees and more than 200 winners presented, reflecting the remarkable sporting talent we have here in North Queensland.”
