Rate the Sanny (Sanitiser)

Around the Live FM office earlier today a discussion started about hand sanitiser, it’s become such a massive part of our lives and routines in 2020. I mentioned an experience I had on the weekend with a sanitiser that was quite unpleasant (even as you read I know you’re picturing your own yucky sanny experiences), it was sticky and took too long to dry, but worst of all was the smell. Thankfully it wasn’t a lingerer and within a half-hour or so I didn’t think about it any further, nor was I reminded by the smell of my own hands. The discussion this morning began to branch into discussing places where we’d wished someone had let us know that you should simply BYO at some places.

So then I decided that we need to share and learn from one another’s experiences which brings us here, launching Rate the Sanny. Tell us your Sanny experiences as you’ve been out and about using this quick form. This is isn’t designed to shame the incredible workplaces, stores, schools, or events that we frequent but to have some fun telling of the good, bad, and smelly sanitiser situations we’ve had.

We’ll update the results below, on-air, and on Instagram and Facebook regularly.

Where did you use the Sanitiser?  Brand or Product Name if known: Describe the type of sanitizer:  How does it feel on the hands?  Describe the smell How effective is the product? Other notable characteristics Overall rating out of 10 First Name
99.9 Live FM 3M Avagard 9250-P Thin pink liquid. Very runny, a little hard to contain. Only a slight burn if used with cuts/scrapes. Leaves hands feeling very clean and dries in seconds. Like a pleasant soap mixed with a bit of alcohol. The best one I’ve smelt so far. 70% Alcohol, no Corona on it’s watch. Because it’s difficult to contain it can be a slip hazard. Also useful for disinfecting phones, surfaces and all manner of things. 8/10 Dan
Northreach Baptist Church N/A Gel Sticky and kinda oily, took a while for my hands to dry I can’t remember Well I’m still alive so…I guess it’s effective? 4/10 Sam
Woolworths Castletown Unknown Gel Really quite sticky, takes a few minutes to dry. You kinda don’t want to touch anything for the first few isles. No issues with burning. It’s pretty awful, the stickiness would be fine if it didn’t also smell so bad. Like someone has left cheap vodka in the sun. Didn’t see, based off the smell, very effective. Just an unpleasant time with this one. I’m sure it’s doing the job though. 3/10 Anonymous
Empire Alternacade Unkown Thin gel. Wasn’t too bad for a more gel like product. Absorbed pretty quickly, no burning. As you’d expect a bit of an alcohol smell, but not too unpleasant, nothing like some of the supermarket sanitisers I’ve used. Given that you go there to have a drink I was glad there was no lingering bad smell. I think it said 75% I’ve had the experience of some products etched into my memory probably for life, so it’s good to encounter one that wasn’t memorable. I guess that’s what you want in sanny, if it’s not noteworthy it’s good. 7/10 Cowboys Fan
Calvary Christian Church Unknown Gel It feels quite runny but easy to get all the spots on the hands after 5 mins I felt that all the germs had 99.9% gone and I felt much more Covid safe! Smell was a quite a strong germ killing smell and made the nose regret that it was made by God to smell things. I don’t know exactly but it definitly did the Job There was A LOT OF IT!
Easy to use
9/10 Cooper

Dan’s Hoisin Pork Pizza

I’m always a little skeptical when it comes to fusion food, I know I’m not alone in this, but some cuisines have been perfected over centuries or even longer, who am I to mess with it? However I’m always keen to try things, especially when there is good evidence that it will work. For this incredible pizza, it’s actually inspired by one of my favourite street food eats, Banh Mi. It’s one of the OG’s of fusion food, marrying the tastes of Vietnam with the Baguette’s the French brought when they colonised the area in the 19th century. Honestly, if you’ve never had Banh Mi, can you really call yourself a foodie? Questionable.

So I asked myself why not do a similar thing with Pizza? I couldn’t think of a reason, so I did.

It’s super easy to do, you can use any kind of pork, the most decadent being pork belly rashers, they are amazing, but if you’re after something a little more low fat, pork scotch fillet is awesome.

Here’s what you need:

Dough:

  • Make it your own or not, you’ll need 2 pizzas.

Meat:

  • 600g of Pork
  • 1/4 cup of Hoisin Sauce
  • 2 tsp Crushed Ginger
  • 2 tsp Crushed Garlic
  • 1 tbsp Sweet Soy Sauce
  • 1 tbsp Sesame Oil
  • Sesame Seeds

Pizza Sauce:

  • 2 tbsp Sweet Soy Sauce
  • 1 tbsp Sesame Oil
  • 1 tsp Crushed Garlic
  • 1 tsp Sriracha Sauce

Toppings:

  • Mozzarella (Hundfulls?!?)
  • 1 cup Sliced Mushrooms
  • 1 cup Sliced Red Capsicum
  • 1 Spring Onion
  • 1/3 cup Chopped Corriander

The How To:

Preheat your oven as hot as it gets, or use a pizza oven, the above pizza was cooked at 275 for about 8 or 9 mins.

Heat a pan to medium high, season pork with salt and pepper.

Drizzle some sesame oil on the pan and add your pork pieces whole, cook until the fat begins to render and there’s a deep brown colour.

Remove pork from pan and rest for 5 min. Slice thinly after resting.

Reduce heat to medium-low and to the pan add sesame oil, garlic and ginger, cook for a minute or so.

Add hoisin and sweet soy sauce and allow to reduce to half, be careful of the sauce burning.

Add sliced pork and sesame seeds, toss to coat evenly and set aside to cool.

Mix together pizza sauce ingredients and lightly brush onto base/dough.

Add in this order; mozarella, pork, mushrooms and capsicum and cook in the oven until cheese browns slightly.

Top with fresh corriander and spring onion. Swirl a bit of extra sriracha sauce over the top and away you go.

Large events in Townsville to be postponed or cancelled in response to COVID-19

Townsville City Council is advancing preparations to slow the spread of the Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) by postponing and cancelling local events. The decision comes on the back of the advice from the Federal Government for non-essential mass gatherings of over 500 people to be cancelled. Townsville Mayor Jenny Hill said the safety of the community and Council employees was the number one consideration when making the decision around events.

“We will be postponing Council events wherever possible and for those that we can, we will be bringing them back bigger and better at a later date,” Cr Hill said. “We are also in conversation with other community groups and event organisers about any bookings in Council venues and the direction they wish to take. “While it is disappointing to have community events cancelled, the most important thing right now is to support Queensland Health in slowing the spread of this virus.  “We’ve pulled through challenging times before and we will do it again, we are a resilient community.”

Council will continue to review upcoming events and take the advice of the State and Federal Governments as the lead agencies in this response. “We will keep in close contact with event hosts and make sure that residents receive the most up-to-date information.” Impacted events include performances being held in Council venues such as the Civic Theatre, public markets, sports festivals, expos and community events such as Townsville Eats. Cr Hill said while it wasn’t ideal, the direction of the Federal Government to cancel events and gatherings of more than 500 people was an important move to slow the spread of COVID-19 in the community.

“Council’s priority during this time is providing essential services to our residents and supporting our health services to slow this down. We want our health providers to be well positioned to deal with COVID-19 and other health emergencies in our community over the coming months.” “The most important thing we can do as a community is follow the advice of Queensland Health to protect our most vulnerable.” A list of impacted Council events can be found below, and a more comprehensive list will be made available on Council’s website.

Townsville Eats gets shake up for start of 2020 season

Put on your best floral shirt and join Townsville City Council for the first Townsville Eats event of the year. The much-loved event is extending over the Victoria Bridge for its first iteration on Friday 27 March, with carnival performers bringing a range of fun acts to the iconic bridge. Townsville Mayor Jenny Hill said it was great to have Townsville Eats back in the city centre for a second year.

“Townsville Eats was extremely popular in 2019, which is why Council has decided to bring it back this March,” Cr Hill said. “The event draws thousands of people into the city and is a great way to celebrate our local food vendors, entertainers and our diverse range of community acts.” Local councillor Ann-Maree Greaney said there would be a few tweaks to the program in March.

“There will still be food vendors and market stalls, live music, entertainment and our outdoor cinema, but our performances will now be held on River Stage at Ogden St,” Cr Greaney said. “Council has also worked to create two event layouts that can cater to both wet and dry weather situations, which is great news.” Cr Greaney said it was great to be able to boost visitor numbers to the city centre with the event. “The turn out to our Townsville Eats season last year was phenomenal. There were thousands of attendees for each event, which is a huge increase in foot traffic along Flinders St,” she said. “Council is committed to activating the Townsville CBD and hosting Townsville Eats is one way to bring more visitors into the city to not only enjoy the Townsville Eats offerings, but to also explore the shops and restaurants open in the area.”

Townsville Eats presents Tropical Friday on Friday, 27 March from 5pm to 9.30pm on Flinders St. For more information, visit whatson.townsville.qld.gov.au.
