It takes 20 minutes to do, costs less than a $1 and communicates volumes of love, but is rarely done. It’s one of those keep safes that we store away in a shoebox somewhere. Letters. They are powerful communicators!
Now we have email and Facebook right to send messages instantly with minimal cost, but what is so special about a letter? Annd I’m not talking the kind with bills in them. I think what makes them special is that they take valuable time and effort.
It is very common for people to receive emails and social media messages, but it is uncommon for people to receive a letter and I believe that is one of the reasons they are valuable. They are valuable because they are rare and they are novelty. It’s similar to our local market stalls, we enjoy seeing the crafts people create because nobody really does it anymore unless it’s a hobby because it takes precious time and energy!!
We love to receive letters because it shows us that someone was thinking about us and they took the time to write to us. When you write a letter, the receiver reads it in their own time and they tend to be all there in the moment as they read what you have taken the time to write.
As it’s coming up to Christmas maybe this year with your Christmas cards you could include a personal Christmas letter about what you and your family have been doing over the past year – what special things did you celebrate this year? What did you and your friends/family get up to this year? How can they pray for you? You can include family photographs, social pictures, a sketch or a clipping of some kind. Even a coloured envelope or themed paper can make it a bit brighter!
So get to it and take the time this Christmas or this week to write to your loved ones!
