Townsville City Council has won big after taking out three prestigious awards that underscore its continued commitment to excellence.
Council won the Most Significant Improvement to Work Health and Safety Performance award at the Work Safe Queensland Work Well Awards 2023, the Community Road Safety award at the Institute of Public Works Engineering Australasia (IPWEA-QNT) Annual Conference and Townsville Citylibraries was honoured with Gold, winning with their exceptional ‘Citylibraries Riverway Build and Grand Opening’ campaign at the Queensland Public Libraries Association (QPLA) Local Government Awards.
Mayor Jenny Hill congratulated Council on its achievements and its dedication to maintaining the highest standards of health and safety and its contributions to the community.
“These awards highlight our commitment to improving both our internal and external environments, showcasing excellence and confirming our operations as best practice amongst business and other government organisations across the state,” Cr Hill said. “Winning the Work Well Award underscores our commitment to ensuring every worker returns home safe, every day. We have a dedicated team of more than 1,700 employees in various roles in 40 different locations. We are dedicated in our commitment to continuously improve safety practices and communication and I thank all that were involved.”
Cr Hill said Council’s parks maintenance team deserved all the recognition they got at the IPWEA-QNT Annual Conference for their engineering solutions to limit the amount of items being thrown while maintaining open spaces.
“The parks and maintenance team looked at the problem, created ideas and implemented a range of solutions which have improved personal and community safety,” she said. “Through the engineering changes our roadside maintenance teams have been able to continue with trimming and mowing grass and keeping our city looking tidy without the concern of turning items like rocks into dangerous projectiles. It was great to see the work our team put into this solution recognised at the awards night.”
Cr Hill also congratulated Citylibraries on their state award, highlighting their dedication to knowledge, culture, and community.
“The ‘Citylibraries Riverway build’ was a project that brought together international public library design and service trends, creating a remarkable space that caters to the diverse needs of the community,” she said. “The grand opening was testament to the community spirit and connections, with thousands of residents attending from all over Townsville. The Gold Award is well-deserved recognition of the dedication and commitment involved in making this project a resounding success.”
