COUNCIL’S UPDATED CORPORATE PLAN

Council is seeking community feedback on its new corporate plan which aims to grow Townsville into a globally connected community driven by innovation and lifestyle.

Mayor Jenny Hill said the corporate plan included ambitious targets and a future focussed view of growing Townsville as a sustainable city economically, environmentally and socially.

“This is a bold corporate plan to ensure we are best-placed to maximise the opportunities of tomorrow today,” Cr Hill said.

“Attracting industries of the future and world class research and education opportunities will drive population growth, build our community, reduce unemployment and have a positive impact on our social fabric.”

The corporate plan is based around five key pillars:

  • a city that connects you to what you need at the time you choose;
  • a circular economy that advances business and moves towards zero waste;
  • the hub for modern industry
  • a sustainable destination that embraces and participates in the arts, sports, events and recreational activities; and
  • a leading centre of education, training and research commercialisation.

Included in the corporate plan are commitments to zero landfill by 2030 and carbon neutrality by 2040 as well as positioning the city as a specialist leader in research and simulation.

Cr Hill said the plan has been based on engagement with industry and community groups over the past year as well as seeking community input.

“To ensure residents and their values are at the centre of this corporate plan, Council completed a Liveability Study across the entire local government area in October 2020.

“The Liveability Study highlighted the values, aspirations and ideas of the community and has been used as a guiding piece for development of this plan.”
