MAGNETIC ISLAND TRIATHLON
Fun in the Sun with local tropical triathlon in 5th year!
Magnetic Island Triathlon – Sunday 26th June 2022
Exciting event catering for Individuals and teams, and first-timers Townsville locals are being encouraged to come and participate in this great locally grown event for the fifth year running. Early on the morning of Sunday 26th June, 150 nervous locals will be swimming, cycling and running their way through the tropical paradise of Magnetic Island to the finish line on the deck at Peppers Blue on Blue.
This “Race-cation” is the perfect location for a race and a local vacation thrown in together. The event is the brainchild of two local triathletes: Brendan Cochrane and Steve Tetley, who, after years of competing in the sport all around the world, saw an opportunity to have a world class event at our local playground at Magnetic Island .
Magnetic Island Triathlon Race Director Brendan Cochrane said that every year locals are amazed at the beauty of Magnetic Island when viewed from a swim, a bike and a run!
“Since triathlon was first recorded as an organised sport in California in September of 1974, it has developed into one of the fastest growing sports in the world, and one that can be enjoyed by all ages and abilities, said Mr Cochrane.’ “You can participate as an individual or get together with your family or mates and race as a team,” he said. “If you’ve ever been curious about triathlon and wanted to give it a go, this is the perfect event for beginners.” Last year we had more than 66% female participation, 50% were first-timers, and a huge number of kids in the junior 7-13 ages category. For punters wanting more information, I encourage them to visit our Facebook page for a full run down of events and to check out the photos from last year’s event”.
The event is support by the Townsville City Council, Arcadia Surf Life Saving and the local Magnetic Island SES
