THE APPLETON LADIES’ POTATO RACE

Presented by Townsville City Council

Inspired by real-life events and featuring a cast of five fabulous women, THE APPLETON LADIES’ POTATO RACE is a funny, honest and heart-warming story about upsetting the potato cart and standing up for your principles.

MEET THE CAST

Penny Anderson

Meet Penny, who couldn’t wait to leave her hometown of Appleton when she finished school but now finds herself back there. The locals can’t help referring to her ‘colourful’ past but her steely determination is what the Doctor ordered.

Bev Anderson

Everyone knows a Bev – The Show Society President.  No-nonsense attitude who doesn’t suffer fools, – can be cantankerous and hold a grudge but she can have a surprisingly softcore when you least expect it.

Barb Ling

Meet Barb, the super-efficient secretary of the committee, diligent, task-orientated and keeper of

peace.

Nikki Armstrong

The hairdresser with flair and a penchant for 80s fashion. Super competitive Champion Potato Racer and sister of Penny who takes any opportunity to cut her down.

Rania Hamid

A talented artist and newly arrived refugee from Syria, Rania is keen to make a home in Appleton, share her culture and tell her story.

Then there’s Appleton, a remote town of 1500 people in regional New South Wales with the motto ‘That’s how we’ve always done it’.  This play is not to be confused with the novel and movie The Gurnsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society – no connection except there’s the mention of the word potato in the story!  This play is about standing up for your principles!
