Cyclone Prep

Time is right to take advantage of free dump weekend

Townsville City Council is giving residents the chance to get rid of their waste for free this weekend.

The free dump weekend offers free domestic waste disposal at all Council waste facilities over four days from 25 – 28 October inclusive.

Townsville Mayor Jenny Hill said this was the perfect time of year to get rid of domestic waste.

“Cyclone season is coming up so now’s the best time to make sure your yard and home are cleaned up and clear of any kind of waste,” Cr Hill said.

But she said there was no need to wait until a free dump weekend to get rid of extra items around the house.

“Council provides free green waste and recycling disposal to our community all year round, so make sure you take advantage of that throughout the year,” she said.

Townsville Water and Waste chairperson Councillor Russ Cook said Council worked to have more flexibility during this free dump weekend.

“The free dump weekend is running over four days this year to give more access to shift workers and other residents who need a bit of flexibility about when they can take their rubbish to the dump,” he said.

“Make sure you take advantage of this weekend by stocking up your ute or trailer and helping out any elderly neighbours, friends or family who might not be able to take their own rubbish to the dump.”

Residents are being reminded to cover their loads when travelling to drop off their rubbish.

TC DEBBIE – School Cancellations

I never had cyclone days at school, we had fire days a few times and a couple of snow days, but cyclone prep is something else. Make sure you got Monopoly or some good card games because the kids most likely won’t be at school if you’re in the Warning zone.

The Department of Education and Training have an extensive list of state schools, private and independent schools and childcare facilities that will be shut due to TCD.

If your child’s school childcare service isn’t on this list you’ll need to contact them directly.

Absences from school due to a natural disaster do not recorded on a report card or student record.

Tafe North Students keep up to date with their Facebook page. James Cook Uni students check out their web updates here. For other providers contact them directly.
