Looking for easy and affordable birthday party food and game ideas this year for your child or niece/nephew? Well here are some of the birthday basics.
If you’re making cupcakes then sprinkles and different coloured icing will make your cupcakes pop – it works every time and you don’t need to be an artist. Use a basic cake recipe and use an array icing colours – or keep them all one bright colour. Throw in a fruit platter, some yummy sandwiches, punch and a few jars of lollies and chocolates. Or for some fun make green jelly and hide some red frog lollies in the jelly. If you’re baking the birthday cake you can check out these easy and quick recipes.
Or even make a giant donut cake for something a bit different.

With kids costumes you don’t need to go overboard. Children find delight in the littlest things and the simplest things brings them joy and excitement! Throwing a costume party can be as easy and simple as making some homemade masks the kids can wear or decorating a party hat. These can be done in advance or the kids can decorate them once they arrive (just set up a small craft table). You can purchase these blank masks/party hats or otherwise make them from cardboard (cut the cardboard into the shape of a slice of pizza and staple ends together.) Then paint and decorate.
Need some game Ideas? Why not play the classic games like, pass the parcel, musical chairs, duck duck goose, group skipping, hopscotch, Simon says or a scavenger or treasure hunt. These games are always a hit and seem to be children’s favourites. I’m sure you remember playing some, if not most of these when you were young! Don’t forget kids always have an imagination! Let them also think of some imaginary play or their own games too (which they probably learned at school).
For table decorations you can keep it simple and cost-effective by using a wrapping paper roll with your choice of design prints and colours and place over a small table, make sure you secure it neatly under the table with tape for a clean look. You will easily find one with a birthday party themed print. You can also add any kids party decorations that you might find in the shops to hang around or sit on the table. This will be your signature table for the cake and party food. Tie a few balloons around this area and make small label cards for the food using cardboard.
Lastly, take a few pics and really enjoy the day!
