Townsville City Council is carrying out beach restoration works to improve access at Rowes Bay and Pallarenda next week.
The project will see 500m3 of sand redistributed around the impacted access paths on the beaches to mitigate the impact of coastal erosion and allow residents to safely traverse the dunes down onto the shore.
Community Health, Safety and Environmental Sustainability Committee chairperson Maurie Soars said reprofiling the beach is important for managing the impact of erosion along the most popular beaches in Townsville.
“The beaches along Rowes Bay and Pallarenda are very popular and with the combination of weather, tides and foot traffic it is important that we manage erosion along these areas,” Cr Soars said.
“This project will re-establish the beach paths used by residents and visitors that currently have some rather steep declines as a result of shoreline erosion.
“This work is crucial for us to keep the beaches visitor-friendly and accessible year-round and we expect sections of the beaches to be closed while our crews complete the reprofiling.
“However, most of the beaches will remain open and we do thank everyone for their patience during the week as we get this done.”
The works are scheduled to be completed as follows:
- Rowes Bay from 29 March for 1 week (beach access available to the northern side of beach pedestrian access #7, or south of the beach towards Soroptimist Park)
- Pallarenda from 31 March for 2 days (beach access available from north side of Pallarenda beach pedestrian access #19 or south of the North Barrier Surf Lifesavers area)
Further renourishment of beaches across Townsville is expected to be completed later in the year.
