Townsville residents are being called up to take part in the Great Northern Clean Up on Magnetic Island.
The event is being held at Nelly Bay on Magnetic Island on September 12 to clean up rubbish, protecting the environment ahead of the disaster season.
Townsville Mayor Jenny Hill said the clean up would ensure that the Magnetic Island’s pristine natural environments were free of rubbish.
“We are so lucky to live in such close proximity to world-class natural environments and it is crucial we all play a part in cleaning up the rubbish that hasn’t made it into our bins,” Cr Hill said.
“This year, Council’s registered event is being held on Magnetic Island at the old helipad at Nelly Bay and it would be great to see the community jump on board.
“Council will provide Clean Up bags and gloves for participants, as well as a native plant as a thank you for taking part in the day.
“This the perfect time of the year to get involved in a clean up because the weather has only just started to warm back up.
“It also allows us to remove as much rubbish as possible ahead of the upcoming disaster season, stopping that rubbish from being washed down waterways during any wet weather.”
The Great Northern Clean Up is a Clean Up Australia initiative to allow communities in Northern Australia to tidy up during the cooler months, outside of the peak tourism season and before the cyclone season.
