Four Townsville women have united to help the regions unwanted animals, and teach children the importance of giving back.
Krissy Regan, Debbie Belcastro and Jennifer Hyatt, are hoping their work in a new children’s book, written by Krissy, will help raise awareness and funds for Wyld Hearts Sanctuary run by Yvette Kelly and her family.
Krissy’s new book; Bobby, A Horse Who Teaches a Young Girl How to Love, was inspired by her childhood relationship with her horse and growing up on a cattle station outside of Charters Towers. Krissy hopes the book will encourage children to understand the important relationship between animals and humans and how we can learn valuable lessons from our pets such as trust, caring for others, and that love comes in many shapes and sizes. The book has been beautifully illustrated by Debbie and Jennifer using watercolour paintings of horses and rural life on the Station where Krissy grew up and scenes from Charters Towers.
Wyld Hearts Sanctuary, located near Majors Creek was formed in 2018 by Yvette and her family to help recover animals who are mistreated or neglected by their owners. This includes horses, dogs, as well pigs. The Sanctuary provides refuge as well as medical treatment to animals of all shapes and sizes. Krissy and Yvette met by chance at a training event for board members of NGO’s and struck up an immediate rapport.
“The work that Yvette and her family do is wonderful, and they make a lot of personal sacrifices to care for these animals. Yvette is a kind hearted and giving person and I wanted to find away to help her.” Said Krissy.
With the recent launch of Bobby, and the galloping success the book is having not just in North Queensland but internationally, Krissy has been able to donate some proceeds of the book to Wyld Hearts Sanctuary. Krissy, Yvette, Debbie and Jennifer will host an event at The Drill Hall Studio in North Ward on Sunday 17 th October from 9:30-11:30. Families will be able to hear a reading of Krissy’s Book, meet the Artists and enjoy a free ride on a pony with Cater’s Pony Rides. Proceeds raised from this event will go to Wyld Hearts Sanctuary.
