THURINGOWA PARK UPGRADE

Thuringowa Park upgrade works underway

Another Townsville park is undergoing a makeover with construction well underway on a new playground for Thuringowa Park.  The $470,000 upgrade will include new climbing structures, slides, swings and percussion equipment to encourage creativity and exploration. Safety is also a major factor as new fencing and softfall flooring will be installed as part of the upgrades.  Townsville Mayor, Troy Thompson said the community was consulted to deliver a playground that suited the needs of residents.

“Through the Have Your Say platform Council was able to engage with residents about what they wanted and what was achievable,” Cr Thompson said.  “Residents told Council they wanted the equipment upgraded and they also wanted more shade and seating to make the space more enjoyable for parents and caregivers.”

Division 5 Councillor, Vera Dirou said parks and playgrounds like Thuringowa Park were a haven for exploration and imaginative play and Council was proud to be able to deliver the works.  “Council is committed to developing quality places where people want to live, work, play and learn,” Cr Dirou said.  “The upgrade of this park was a budget commitment and it’s exciting to see work underway on this project.”

Thuringowa Park is one of more than 350 parks and playgrounds maintained by Townsville City Council.  The project is jointly funded by the Australian Federal Government’s Local Roads and Community Infrastructure Program and Townsville City Council.  Construction is scheduled to finish before the end of the financial year.
