This week on 99.9 Live FM, we had the privilege of chatting with Andrew Hovenden, a former paratrooper and the founder of The Battle Initiative — a faith-based, peer-led organisation supporting veterans, active-duty personnel, first responders, and their families.
Andrew shared his personal journey of service, brokenness, and hope — and how God called him back to Townsville with a vision to see others find healing and purpose beyond their roles in uniform. What began as a step of faith has grown into a movement offering support and community to those who have given so much for others.
What is The Battle Initiative?
The Battle Initiative exists to support those navigating the unseen challenges that can come after a life of service — things like PTSD, mental health struggles, broken relationships, or feeling isolated in civilian life. Their focus is on faith-based recovery, peer support, and reconnection — helping individuals and families rediscover hope.
They offer:
✅ Outposts — peer-led community groups across Australia
✅ Recovery Programs — intentional, Christ-centred programs for healing and transformation
✅ Support for Families — because the effects of service extend beyond the individual
✅ A Place to Belong — built on understanding, shared experience, and faith
