Buying reusable nappies, menstrual products and incontinence products will now be able to nab you up to $100 in cashback as part of Townsville City Council’s new reusables rebate program.
The incentive is available to Townsville residents who opt for sustainable reusable items instead of disposable nappies, menstrual products and incontinence products in an effort to reduce waste. More than 2700 tonnes of disposable nappies and sanitary products are sent to Townsville landfills each year.
Council has allocated $50,000 towards the program, with rebates available on a first-come, first-serve basis.
Townsville Water and Waste Committee chairperson Russ Cook said the rebate would help residents make more sustainable choices for the products they use.
“Council is committed to reducing waste sent to landfill and supporting the use of reusable high usage products like nappies will assist us in diverting 60 per cent of material from landfill by 2026” Cr Cook said.
“The current figures are alarming, with more than 2700 tonnes of nappies, menstrual products and incontinence products going into Townsville landfill each year. To put it into perspective, that’s more than the weight of two cargo ships or six Boeing 747s.
“A cloth nappy can do the same work as 208 disposable nappies, so making the switch makes sense. Menstrual cups, reusable sanitary pads and period and incontinence underwear are all eligible options for locals to purchase and seek the rebate.
“Council is offering a 50 per cent rebate up to a maximum of $100 for purchases of reusable nappies, menstrual products and incontinence products. To apply for the rebate, you’ll need to provide a receipt and proof of residence.”
