Walkers, runners and cyclists will soon be enjoying a refurbished bike and footpath along the Esplanade at Pallarenda – with works underway to upgrade the path between Maskell St and Walter Nisbet Park.
The $700,000 project will create up 10 jobs for locals and extend the 2.5 metre wide concrete shared path by nearly a kilometre along the foreshore on Cape Pallarenda Road.
Local Councillor Ann-Maree Greaney said the project would revitalise the already popular exercise path.
“Pallarenda is one of the most iconic seaside vistas in North Queensland and this upgrade will make it easier for everyone to walk, run or cycle along the foreshore,” Cr Greaney said.
“Council is committed to providing our community with the best infrastructure to enjoy the beautiful outdoors, including upgrading footpaths right across the city.”
Townsville MP Scott Stewart said the upgrade of one of the city’s most popular beachside walkways would encourage even more people to get out and enjoy the North Queensland lifestyle.
“This footpath is used extensively by people who live right across Townsville,” Mr Stewart said.
“The area is regularly busy with people walking and riding their bikes along this beautiful seaside vista.
“The Works for Queensland program invests in local communities by delivering important projects in partnership with Councils – and it helps to create jobs for locals.”
Infrastructure Committee Chair Cr Mark Molachino said the pathway upgrade is funded through the Queensland Government’s Works for Queensland Program.
“I’d like to thank the Queensland Government for funding these important community infrastructure upgrades through the Works for Queensland program,” Cr Molachino said.
“This new footpath will be a huge win for walkers, runners and cyclists, while creating up to 10 jobs for locals – which is great for our local economy.”
