Candlelight Ceremony
The month of May marks Domestic and Family Violence Prevention Month in Queensland. This is a time to raise awareness and promote a clear message that domestic and family violence will
not be tolerated. A Candlelight Ceremony is held annually in remembrance of those who have been killed due to domestic and family violence. It is also an opportunity to acknowledge the many victim-survivors of domestic and family violence in our community. This event is jointly planned and coordinated by The North Queensland Domestic Violence Resource Service, The Women’s Centre, and Sera’s Women’s Shelter.
The Candlelight Ceremony will be held on Domestic Violence Remembrance Day, Wednesday 1st May 2024 at The Women’s Centre, 118 Charles Street, Aitkenvale. We ask that guests arrive at 5:15 pm for a 5:30 pm commencement with the lighting of the candles and a minute of silence at 6 pm. Guest speakers will discuss topics relating to the complex issue of domestic and family violence and its impact on individuals, families, and communities. Everyone is welcome to attend the ceremony. For further comments, please contact Verity Bennett at The North Queensland Domestic Violence Resource Service on 4721 2888.
Please note- Opportunity for Media Interview/Photos at 5 pm prior to the ceremony commencing.
