RIVERWAY LAGOONS BACK OPEN!

Riverway’s two lagoons will be open for residents and visitors to enjoy from Monday following tireless work by Townsville City Council to repair damage from the recent weather event. Council’s team has been hard at work for the past two-and-a-half weeks, pumping about one metre of floodwater out of the plant room and undertaking repairs to pumps and equipment that were damaged during the event. This significant undertaking also included Council teams and contractors removing debris from the lagoons by hand while the pumps were being repaired, chemical dosing to bring water quality back to regulation standards and cleaning the balance tank and backwash tanks to ensure the lagoons remain balanced and filtered. Acting Mayor Ann-Maree Greaney said reopening the lagoons was a step in the right direction as the city continued its recovery efforts.

“Riverway is well loved as the city’s premier sports and recreation precinct, so bringing the facility back online this quickly after such a significant weather event is a win for Townsville. This was a big undertaking from Council’s teams, who had sandbagged the plant rooms in anticipation of the rain event. We know how much the community values the Riverway lagoons, especially during hot summer days, so it was a priority to get both lagoons up and running as quickly as possible. My hat goes off to the team who had to deal with the impact of the water on the equipment as well as the mud and debris brought in by the floodwater which required additional cleaning. Well done” Cr Greaney said.

Riverway’s lagoons and public toilets will be reopened to the community on Monday.
