Mayor Jenny Hill met with stars from the Townsville Fire and Queensland Reds on Tuesday ahead of an epic weekend of sport in the city this weekend.
Cr Hill caught up with the Fire’s Lara McSpadden and Morgan Yaeger and Reds stars Taniela Tupou and Harry Hoopert ahead of the Reds blockbuster Super Rugby Pacific season-opener against the Hurricanes at Queensland Country Bank Stadium this Saturday night.
“We are delighted to welcome the Queensland Reds to Townsville and Queensland Country Bank Stadium this weekend and I can’t wait to see our city get behind for their first game of the season,” Cr Hill said.
“We have a special Townsville Eats: Queensland Reds edition where fans can enjoy something to eat from dozens of food trucks at Flinders Central before walking to the stadium for the big game.”
Saturday’s visit from the Reds won’t be a one off this season, with the team coming back on Saturday, May 6 to take on traditional rivals New South Wales Waratahs, which will serve as a double header with the Super W (women’s competition) grand final.
After the Reds and Hurricanes showdown on Saturday, the action continues Sunday afternoon when the first-placed Fire host the Sydney Flames at Townsville Entertainment and Convention Centre.
This is the final home game of their regular season before the WNBL playoffs get underway in the coming weeks.
The Fire are Townsville’s most successful national sporting franchise and are currently riding an incredible nine-game win streak as they look to add a fourth WNBL title to their previous championship wins in 2015, 2016 and 2018. All three of those championship teams featured retired Fire legend and current Division Six Councillor Suzy Batkovic.
“Council is a long-time supporter of the Fire and we wish them well for this game and beyond as they get ready for the business end of their season,” Cr Hill said.
Townsville is the events capital of North Queensland, and a game like this will not only be supported by Townsville residents but also by people who will travel hundreds of kilometres to experience a game at this level.
