SUPERCARS RACE INTO TOWN

Supercars: NTI Townsville 500 - Airnorth

Traffic management revs up as Supercars race into town

Rubber is set to hit the road as preparation work kicks up a gear to get the Reid Park track ready for an octane-fuelled weekend of racing for the NTI Townsville 500 in the coming weeks.  Townsville’s acting mayor, Paul Jacob, said traffic management in certain areas around the track would start today, and residents traveling into the CBD should plan ahead and be aware of traffic restrictions, road closures, and parking regulations.

“From today until July 13, elements of traffic management will be in place around the track,” Cr Jacob said.  “This is the 15th year of Supercar action at the Reid Park track, and as a city, we are well-practiced at managing road closures and traffic conditions while the Supercars are in town.  “The crews always work to minimize disruptions to traffic in the lead-up to the event, but as it gets closer to the big weekend we start to see the usual road closures in place, such as the street section of the track along Boundary Street and Charters Towers Road.  “Both spectators and drivers love the fact the Reid Park track is a street circuit, but that does mean 11 days road closures have to be in place to prepare the track for racing action.”

The acting Mayor said he understood some of the frustrations motorists would feel and thanked them for their cooperation.

“Be aware that it could take longer to get where you need to go, please obey all the signage and be mindful of the parking regulations,” Cr Jacob said.  “This road closure means the TicketShop at Townsville Civic Theatre will be closed to customers until 9 am on July 9, but you will still be able to contact the TicketShop on 4727 9797 during business hours to book over the phone.  “Similar to previous years, a regulated parking zone will be in place throughout the Supercars precinct to prevent residents who live in the area from being impacted by event parking.”

  • Installation of circuit infrastructure will impact Boundary Street on Tuesday 18, Wednesday 19, and Friday 21 June 2024 between 6 pm and 3 am. Traffic access will be maintained via one lane under stop-and-go traffic control.
  • Installation of circuit infrastructure will impact Charters Towers Road on Thursday 20 June 2024 between 6 pm and 3 am.
  • The circuit will be closed to the public from 7:30 pm on Friday 28 June to 5 am on Tuesday 9 July 2024.
  • Dismantling of circuit infrastructure will impact Charters Towers Road on Friday 12 July 2024 from 6 pm to 3 am.
  • All racing activity will be conducted from Friday 5 July until Sunday 7 July 2024.
