WORLD FOOD DAY

It’s World Food Day on Oct 16 and on the radio we’re having a bit of fun, cooking up some great food. The day also serves to remind us that around the world there are millions of people that experience hunger and food insecurity.

Worldwide, according to the UN’s Food and Agriculture Organisation the prevalence of undernourishment has been steadily increasing since 2017. There are many causes for this increase, including conflict, disasters, environmental factors and inequality. It’s estimated that 733 million didn’t have enough food in 2023.

Cost of living has seen many experiencing food insecurity, that is not having access to affordable food. Just looking at Australia, many are in need, the Foodbank Hunger Report 2023 indicates that 2.3 million households have skipped meals or a whole day of eating because of food insecurity (a lack of access to affordable food).

So while we have a bit of fun on air, let’s also help make sure people get much-needed food. For kids to be free to be kids, learn and develop and think about a future and a career, rather than just their next meal, for the Australian families who experienced hunger, 56% of whom didn’t seek help.

Each of the organizations listed below works to feed hungry people in our communities and worldwide, consider donating for World Food Day.
