Time is right to take advantage of free dump weekend

Townsville City Council is giving residents the chance to get rid of their waste for free this weekend.

The free dump weekend offers free domestic waste disposal at all Council waste facilities over four days from 25 – 28 October inclusive.

Townsville Mayor Jenny Hill said this was the perfect time of year to get rid of domestic waste.

“Cyclone season is coming up so now’s the best time to make sure your yard and home are cleaned up and clear of any kind of waste,” Cr Hill said.

But she said there was no need to wait until a free dump weekend to get rid of extra items around the house.

“Council provides free green waste and recycling disposal to our community all year round, so make sure you take advantage of that throughout the year,” she said.

Townsville Water and Waste chairperson Councillor Russ Cook said Council worked to have more flexibility during this free dump weekend.

“The free dump weekend is running over four days this year to give more access to shift workers and other residents who need a bit of flexibility about when they can take their rubbish to the dump,” he said.

“Make sure you take advantage of this weekend by stocking up your ute or trailer and helping out any elderly neighbours, friends or family who might not be able to take their own rubbish to the dump.”

Residents are being reminded to cover their loads when travelling to drop off their rubbish.

Free Dumping to Finish This Weekend

Townsville City Council has recorded nearly 22,000 tonnes of waste dumped at all facilities as part of the flood recovery with free dumping finishing on Sunday 3 March.

Council crews are moving through the worst impacted areas of the city to finalise the collection of all flood waste.

Townsville Local Recovery and Resilience Group Chair Deputy Mayor Les Walker said the waste clean-up had been a massive job for everyone involved.

“Council has recorded nearly 22,000 tonnes of flood waste dumped by residents throughout the recovery so far,” Cr Walker said.

“The Australian Defence Force were a fantastic help in removing a large amount of waste initially with Council crews and contractors finalising the pick-up by the end of this week.

“Residents are still able to dump their domestic flood waste at all of our facilities for free until the end of the week.”

The waste collection and free dumping is limited to flood affected house contents and does not include any demolition waste.

Townsville Water and Waste Committee Chair Cr Russ Cook said Council’s free annual kerbside collection will kick off for all residents later this year.

“Council will be finalising the flood waste collection by the end of this week, but our regular kerbside collection will begin in late March,” Cr Cook said.

“This is different to the flood clean up and residents will be notified when they are able to place their waste out.

“I’d also like to remind all residents are able to dispose of green waste and recyclables for free all year.”

The temporary dump at Lou Litster Park will also close to the public at 5pm, Sunday 3 March.

All recovery information is available through the Emergency Management Dashboard at disaster.townsville.qld.gov.au.

Council Continues Flood Waste Clean Up

Townsville City Council will continue to collect kerbside rubbish in flood impacted zones to help residents clean up after the unprecedented flood event.

Townsville Local Recovery and Resilience Group Chair Deputy Mayor Les Walker said Council will also continue to provide residents with free dumping of domestic waste at all Council’s waste facilities until 3 March.

“Council crews are still undertaking kerbside clean ups in the worst impacted areas including parts of Railway Estate, Hermit Park, Oonoonba, Idalia, Rosslea, Annandale, Mundingburra,” Cr Walker said.

“Residents in other areas can take their rubbish to any of Council’s waste sites as well as Lou Litster Park for free to help the community with the flood clean up.

“So far residents have dumped over 18,000 tonnes of waste during this recovery period.”

Townsville Water and Waste Committee Chair Cr Russ Cook said all residents will be able to take advantage of the annual free hard waste kerbside collection later on this year.

“Council will begin the 2019 free hard waste kerbside collection service in late March,” Cr Cook said.

“Residents are urged not to place waste out for collection until receiving notification of this service because the regular kerbside collection service is different to the current flood clean up.

“Free kerbside hard waste collection works in conjunction with other waste services provided by Council like free green waste and recycling disposal and free dump weekends.

“Please remember you can dispose of your green waste or recyclables for free all year round.”

All recovery information is available through the Emergency Management Dashboard at disaster.townsville.qld.gov.au.
